The parallel between the readings from the last two weeks and the oddity of a record-breaking October snowstorm is a lesson that should not be lost on anyone. The readings reminded us to be aware of our destiny and to be prepared by living the ways of the Lord. The snowstorm reminded us that when we are not prepared in advance, chaos ensues.
Two weeks ago in Matthew 25: 1-13, we are told of the five foolish virgins who had no oil for their lamps and were unprepared for the bridegroom. In the end they are left behind, and so we are warned to “stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” And then this past Sunday, St Paul (1THES 5:1-6) cautioned that, “…the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night…let us stay alert and sober.” Dire warnings, no doubt, but the underlying story to both of these readings is that for those who do prepare, all is good.
